Helicoprion prehistoric shark

Helicoprion. Artwork of the prehistoric shark Helicoprion. This genus of shark existed from the late Carboniferous period (280 million years ago), until the early Triassic period (225 million years ago). This shark is known only from fossilised sets of teeth that form circular coils. It is thought that the tooth-whorl formed on the lower jaw and developed as newer teeth grew and pushed the older teeth further forward. Shark skeletons are made of cartilage and do not fossilise well. The only parts that fossilise are teeth and parts of the fins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the enigmatic Helicoprion, a prehistoric shark that roamed our oceans millions of years ago. The image beautifully captures the essence of this ancient creature, which existed from the late Carboniferous period to the early Triassic period. Helicoprion is a unique genus known solely from fossilized sets of teeth that form mesmerizing circular coils. These tooth-whorls are believed to have developed on its lower jaw as newer teeth grew and pushed older ones forward. While most shark skeletons do not fossilize well due to their cartilaginous nature, these intricate dental structures provide us with valuable insights into this mysterious species. The illustration depicts the Helicoprion swimming gracefully in an underwater world, surrounded by other fascinating fauna. Its coiled teeth and spiraling mouth serve as a testament to its primitive yet awe-inspiring biology. This artwork serves as a reminder of how diverse and extraordinary life on Earth has been throughout history. Thanks to Science Photo Library for capturing this remarkable piece of natural history through their lens and sharing it with us all. It allows us to appreciate the wonders that once thrived beneath our seas and sparks curiosity about what else lies hidden within our planet's ancient past.
