Great crested newt
Great crested newt (Triturus cristata) underwater. It is named for the large crest that develops on the backs of the males in the mating season. The juveniles lack the dark-spotted orange bellies of the adults. This newt can reach 11-18 centimetres in length, feeding at night on invertebrates in and around water. It hibernates in the winter. The great crested newt is found in northern Europe, and is protected under European law

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of a Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristata) in its natural habitat, submerged underwater. The great crested newt derives its name from the magnificent crest that adorns the backs of males during the breeding season, making them truly stand out. However, this distinguishing feature is absent in juveniles who also lack the dark-spotted orange bellies characteristic of adult newts. Measuring between 11 to 18 centimeters in length, these nocturnal creatures spend their nights foraging on various invertebrates found both within and around water bodies. As winter approaches, they enter a period of hibernation to conserve energy until spring arrives once again. Native to northern Europe, including Britain, this remarkable amphibian holds protected status under European law due to its rarity and vulnerability. Its presence serves as an indicator of healthy aquatic ecosystems as it relies on clean water sources for survival. The image captures the great crested newt immersed gracefully beneath the surface with only hints of surrounding stones visible. It offers a glimpse into their secretive world where they navigate through aquatic environments with ease and grace. Science Photo Library presents this stunning photograph which not only highlights the unique characteristics of this endangered species but also emphasizes our responsibility towards preserving and protecting such precious wildlife treasures across Europe's diverse landscapes.
