Fuegans in their hut, 18th century

Fuegians. Engraved plate depicting a group of Fuegians, the indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America. Fuegians were one of three tribes leading a hunter-gatherer existence. Settlement of their lands by Europeans introduced diseases such as measles that decimated their populations. This plate was published in An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty : for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, by John Hawkesworth, printed at London in 1773

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 18th century, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Fuegians, indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego in South America. The engraved plate depicts a group of Fuegians gathered inside their humble hut, showcasing their hunter-gatherer existence. During this time, European settlers arrived in their lands, unknowingly introducing diseases like measles that devastated the Fuegian populations. This historical record serves as a reminder of the tragic consequences brought upon by colonization. Published in John Hawkesworth's "An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty" this illustration provides valuable insight into anthropology and exploration during that era. It captures not only the physical space these native people inhabited but also offers an observation into their way of life. Todd-White Art Photography has beautifully preserved this engraving from 1773, allowing us to reflect on our shared history with indigenous communities around the world. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and authenticity to this powerful image. As we gaze at this remarkable piece, we are transported back centuries ago when these resilient individuals lived harmoniously with nature. It is through such photographs that we can appreciate and honor cultures that have shaped our world today.
