Fallopian tube, SEM

Fallopian tube. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lining of a fallopian tube (oviduct). The fallopian tubes carry the egg from the ovary to the uterus (womb). They are lined with a moist mucous membrane that contains two types of cells, secretory cells and ciliated cells. The secretory cells (blue) secrete mucus, which protects the lining of the fallopian tubes. The ciliated cells are covered in microscopic hair-like structures known as cilia (purple). These beat in wave-like motions and function to move the egg along the fallopian tube. Magnification: x8000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a fallopian tube, as seen through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The fallopian tube, also known as the oviduct, plays a vital role in the female reproductive system by carrying eggs from the ovary to the uterus. The lining of this delicate structure is composed of two types of cells: secretory cells and ciliated cells. In this image, we can observe these cells in stunning detail. The secretory cells are depicted in shades of blue and are responsible for producing mucus that safeguards the inner lining of the fallopian tubes. Contrasting against the blue background are purple-colored ciliated cells. These remarkable structures possess microscopic hair-like projections called cilia. Through wave-like motions, these cilia work harmoniously to propel an egg along its journey through the fallopian tube. With a magnification level of x8000 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this SEM image offers us an extraordinary glimpse into one aspect of our complex biological makeup. It serves as a reminder that even within our bodies' most intimate systems lies astonishing beauty waiting to be explored and understood. This awe-inspiring photograph is brought to you by Science Photo Library - an invaluable resource for scientific imagery that continues to inspire curiosity and fascination about our world's wonders.
