EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an intriguing artifact from the late 19th century - an enema and stomach pump encased in a beautifully crafted wooden box made of brass, wood, and ivory. The enema, resembling a syringe-like device, was used to cleanse the lower intestinal tract by introducing fluids through the rectum and colon via the anus. On the other hand, stomach pumps were employed to empty the contents of one's stomach using a long tube inserted through either the mouth or nose. These gastrointestinal cleansing techniques have been practiced throughout history, with evidence dating back as far as ancient Egyptian medical texts from 1500 B. C. However, it was not until the 18th century that stomach pumps were first invented. This particular apparatus is attributed to Maw Son and Thompson and is estimated to originate from around 1880 in England. The intricate craftsmanship of this antique instrument reflects both its historical significance and its importance within medical practices of that era. It serves as a reminder of how medical technology has evolved over time while highlighting our continuous quest for understanding and improving human health. This remarkable print captures not only a piece of medical history but also invites contemplation on how far we have come in terms of gastroenterology advancements since then.
