Common European mole C016 / 8758
The common mole, Tulpa europaea. A widespread mammal species, found throughout Europe except in South Western Spain and Southern Italy. Moles live most of their lives underground, in a series of tunnels, during the excavation of which excess soil is pushed upwards at intervals, forming mole-hills". They favour loose and fertile soils. Moles have no external ears, and their eyes are very small, and sometimes covered in skin. In this picture the position of the eyes is just discernible as two slightly darker patches behind the snout. The production of mole-hills is a nuisance to all growers of grass lawns, especially sports grounds. Within gardens, moles are a minor pest, sometimes causing root damage to plants, resulting in death of the plant during drought periods"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the elusive Common European mole, Tulpa europaea, in all its underground glory. Known for their widespread presence throughout Europe (excluding South Western Spain and Southern Italy), these fascinating mammals spend most of their lives hidden beneath the surface, creating intricate tunnel systems that result in distinctive mole-hills. With no external ears and tiny eyes often concealed by skin, this particular image reveals the faint outline of the mole's eyes as two slightly darker patches behind its snout. It showcases the unique features of this species while highlighting its preference for loose and fertile soils. While moles may be a nuisance to grass lawn growers, particularly on sports grounds where perfectly manicured surfaces are desired, they are considered only a minor pest within gardens. However, during drought periods, their root-damaging activities can lead to plant death. Through this print from Science Photo Library by Dr Jeremy Burgess, we gain insight into the world of these subterranean creatures. Appreciating both their ecological significance and occasional impact on human endeavors such as gardening or maintaining sports fields allows us to better understand and coexist with these remarkable animals.
