Coloured SEM of liver tissue with fibrosis

Fibrosis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of human liver tissue (red-brown) affected by fibrosis. This is a condition characterised by an overgrowth of connective tissue (pale purple). Fibrous tissue may be formed as an exaggerated healing response to injury, infection or inflammation. Specialised structures within the liver are replaced by the fibrous tissue impairing the functions of this organ. A large macrophage (yellow), also known as a Von Kupffer cell, occupies the central part of the frame. Red blood cells and a monocyte (centre left) are also seen. Magnification: x1600 at 6x7cm size

Connective Tissue Fibrosis Macrophage Condition Disorder Health Care

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph of human liver tissue affected by fibrosis. The image reveals the intricate details of this condition, characterized by an excessive growth of connective tissue in the liver. The fibrous tissue, depicted in a pale purple hue, replaces specialized structures within the organ and impairs its normal functions. At the heart of the frame stands a large macrophage, also known as a Von Kupffer cell, portrayed in vibrant yellow. This immune cell plays a crucial role in engulfing and eliminating foreign particles or damaged cells within the liver. Surrounding it are red blood cells and a monocyte visible towards the center-left. Fibrosis can arise as an exaggerated healing response to injury, infection, or inflammation. It is often associated with various diseases and disorders affecting liver health care. As we delve into this mesmerizing image at 1600 times magnification on a 6x7cm scale, we gain insight into both the beauty and complexity of our body's internal workings. Science Photo Library has once again captured an extraordinary moment that merges artistry with scientific exploration. This photograph serves as a reminder of how medical imaging can illuminate our understanding of diseases like fibrosis while inspiring advancements in medicine for improved patient care.
