Betelgeuse emission spectrum

Sirius emission spectrum. This multicoloured band is obtained by recording what wavelengths of light (each seen as a different colour) are emitted by the star Betelgeuse (Alpha Canis Majoris). White light is a combination of a range of light wavelengths and can be separated into its components using a prism. The dark vertical lines (called Fraunhofer absorption lines) show that some wavelengths of light emitted outwards from the hot interior of the star were absorbed by atoms within the cool gases that make up the stars outer layer

Absorbed Absorption Astrophysical Astrophysics Band Betelgeuse Cosmology Emission Light Line Lines Multi Coloured Optics Spectrum Star Stellar Universe Wavelengths White Light Emitted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing emission spectrum of Betelgeuse, also known as Alpha Canis Majoris. The multicolored band represents the various wavelengths of light emitted by this stellar giant. By utilizing a prism, white light is dissected into its distinct components, each color representing a different wavelength. However, what makes this image truly remarkable are the dark vertical lines cutting through the vibrant spectrum. These lines, known as Fraunhofer absorption lines, reveal that certain wavelengths of light emitted from Betelgeuse's scorching core were absorbed by atoms within its cooler outer layers composed of gases. In essence, this photograph captures not only the beauty and complexity of our universe but also provides valuable insights into astrophysics and cosmology. It serves as a testament to humanity's ability to unravel the secrets hidden within celestial bodies. As we gaze upon this stunning visual representation of Betelgeuse's emission spectrum, we are reminded of our never-ending quest for knowledge and understanding in the vast expanse beyond our own planet. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into the wonders that lie beyond our reach yet continue to captivate our imagination.
