Antarctic fur seal blonde male
Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) blonde male. The male is much larger than the female, reaching a length of up to 2 metres and a weight of 120 kilograms. This is one of the less common blonde-coated animals. A blonde or white seal lacks pigment in the outer guard hairs of its fur coat. It is not a true albino though, as the eyes and skin are still pigmented. The rate at which blonde seals occur in this seals main breeding population (South Georgia) is thought to be less than 1 in 900. Photographed on South Georgia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent Antarctic fur seal, specifically a rare blonde male. Towering over its female counterparts, this impressive creature can reach lengths of up to 2 meters and weigh an astonishing 120 kilograms. The distinctive blonde coat sets it apart from the majority of its species, as these seals typically possess dark-colored fur. Unlike true albinos, this unique seal still exhibits pigmentation in its eyes and skin. In fact, the occurrence of such blondes within the main breeding population at South Georgia is estimated to be less than one in every 900 individuals. This makes encountering one of these striking creatures a truly remarkable experience. Photographed against the breathtaking backdrop of South Georgia's coastal shores, this image captures the essence of nature's wonders. With its furry exterior glistening under the sunlight, this adult male exemplifies both power and grace. As a top predator in these icy waters, it plays an essential role in maintaining balance within the marine ecosystem. The biological significance of this Antarctic fur seal extends beyond its visual appeal; it represents resilience and adaptation to survive in harsh environments like Antarctica. This photograph serves as a testament to the incredible diversity found on our planet and reminds us to cherish and protect these precious wild animals for generations to come.
