Anatomy and royalty, 17th century

Anatomy and royalty, 17th century. English anatomist William Harvey (1578-1657) dissecting a deers head in front of the English King Charles I (1600-1649). Harvey is famous for his discovery that the blood and heart form part of a complete systemic circulatory system, something that had not been fully realised before. He published his findings in 1628 in De Motu Cordis (On the Motion of the Heart and Blood). The book included a dedication to King Charles I. This painting, dating from 1848, is by the painter Robert Hannah. The original is held at the Royal College of Physicians, London
