1820 Jean Baptiste Lamarck old and blind
Jean Baptiste Lamarck (1 August 1744 - 18 December 1829) portrait when old and blind. A later hand coloured frontis engraving by Lizars from his Cabinet Cyclopaedia series. Lamarck was a french pre-Darwinian advocate of evolution (transmutation) and an influential invertebrate taxonomist. Lamarck believed that use and disuse of organs could produce heritable changes. His role as a pioneer in recognising evolution as a process is acknowledged, but his proposed evolutionary mechanisms widely lampooned. Recent developments in epigenetics have made some of his suggestions seem less outlandish. Lamarck also made lasting contributions to invertebrate classification, defining many groups. Controversial in his own lifetime, he made an enemy of the influential Baron Cuvier. Lamarck reputedly died bankrupt, buried in a paupers grave

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned French biologist, Jean Baptiste Lamarck, in his later years. The portrait captures him as an old and blind man, a testament to his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and scientific exploration. Created by artist Lizars for the Cabinet Cyclopaedia series, this hand-coloured frontis engraving beautifully portrays Lamarck's distinguished appearance. Lamarck was a pre-Darwinian advocate of evolution and a prominent taxonomist specializing in invertebrates. He proposed that heritable changes could occur through the use and disuse of organs, an idea that was widely ridiculed at the time but has gained some recognition with recent advancements in epigenetics. Despite facing controversy during his lifetime and clashing with influential figures like Baron Cuvier, Lamarck's contributions to evolutionary theory cannot be understated. His pioneering work laid the foundation for recognizing evolution as an ongoing process. Beyond his revolutionary ideas on transmutation and acquired characteristics, Lamarck also made significant contributions to invertebrate classification. However, despite his achievements, he reputedly died bankrupt and was buried in a pauper's grave. This thought-provoking artwork not only pays homage to Jean Baptiste Lamarck but also serves as a reminder of how scientific progress often faces resistance before being embraced by future generations.
