1764 Patagonian Giants

A copperplate engraving inspired from Commodore Byrons " An account of a Voyage Round the World" (1767) recording his meeting around 1764 with the giants of Patagonia. Since the time of Magellan there had been rumours that the Patagonians were giants, but the account of Byron re-ignited the popular fascination by describing men who were head and shoulders taller than his tallest men. Later explorers would discover this was an exaggeration - they were at most 6 feet six inches - though that is still large for the time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1764, a time when exploration and curiosity about distant lands were at their peak. Inspired by Commodore Byron's "An account of a Voyage Round the World" this copperplate engraving depicts an extraordinary encounter with the Patagonian Giants. For centuries, rumors had circulated about these legendary beings inhabiting the remote region of Patagonia. However, it was Byron's detailed description that reignited popular fascination with these supposed giants. According to his account, they stood head and shoulders above his tallest men, instilling awe and wonder among those who read his words. Later expeditions would reveal that this perception was exaggerated; indeed, they were tall for their time but not true giants as initially believed. These remarkable individuals measured no more than six feet six inches in height - still an impressive stature considering the era. Paul D. Stewart's colored illustration brings to life this momentous encounter between humanity and variability in size. It serves as a testament to our enduring fascination with anthropological discoveries and our relentless pursuit of knowledge about different tribes and cultures around the world. As we gaze upon this artwork, let us appreciate how exploration has shaped our understanding of human diversity throughout history while reminding ourselves of the importance of accurate observation in scientific endeavors.
