EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph taken in May 1989, we witness a momentous occasion during the Lostwithiel Twinning Association's 10th birthday celebrations. The image captures the heartfelt exchange of cultural appreciation between two communities as the St Austell branch of the West Country Embroiderers presents an exquisite embroidered picture to the Lostwithiel Twinning Association. The beautifully crafted artwork will serve as a symbolic gift, strengthening the bond between Lostwithiel in Cornwall and its twin town, Pleyber-Christ in Brittany. Later that year, it will be proudly showcased in Pleyber-Christ, further solidifying their enduring connection. Displayed prominently in the foreground are intricately designed plates depicting Lostwithiel's town badge. These remarkable pieces were skillfully created by John Webb of Lostwithiel Pottery, adding an extra touch of local craftsmanship to this significant event. The presentation takes place within the elegant confines of the Mayor's parlour, radiating an air of prestige and importance. Standing side by side are key figures involved in fostering these international relationships: Mary Liddicoat, Irene Gilbert, Grace Fisher, Vic May (Chairman of Lostwithiel Twinning Association), Margaret Teague (Chairman of West Country Embroiderers), Joyce Palmer, and Selma Davies. Photographer Jonathan Barker expertly captures this historic moment for posterity with his lens – freezing time and immortalizing a celebration that epitomizes friendship across borders.
