RAF Photo Reconnaissance image of the Bielefeld viaduct

RAF Photo Reconnaissance image of the Bielefeld viaduct, following the successful daylight attack by 15 Avro Lancasters of No. 617 Squadron RAF on 14 March 1945. Five arches of the viaducts collapsed after 22, 000-lb Grand Slam and 12, 000-lb Tallboy deep penetration bombs were dropped over the target area. Numerous craters from previous attempts to demolish the structure can be seen covering the floor of the Johannisbach Valley.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to a significant moment in history - the aftermath of a successful daylight attack on the Bielefeld viaduct during World War II. The image, captured by RAF Photo Reconnaissance, showcases the devastating impact of 22,000-lb Grand Slam and 12,000-lb Tallboy deep penetration bombs dropped by 15 Avro Lancasters from No. 617 Squadron RAF. As we gaze upon this aerial view, our eyes are drawn to the five collapsed arches of the viaduct standing as a testament to the destructive power unleashed upon it. Scattered across the floor of Johannisbach Valley are numerous craters left behind from previous attempts to demolish this vital railway transport structure. The photograph not only highlights the immense damage caused by these bombings but also serves as a reminder of the bravery and skill exhibited by those who carried out such daring missions. It offers us a glimpse into an era marked by conflict and sacrifice. Transported back in time to March 15th, 1945, we can almost hear echoes of war reverberating through this powerful image. It stands as a poignant symbol of resilience amidst destruction and reminds us never to forget those who fought valiantly for freedom during one of humanity's darkest chapters - World War II.
