EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a remarkable moment in history during the Second World War. In March 1941, amidst the chaos and conflict of the forties, ten Norwegian ships attempted to escape from Gothenburg, Sweden to seek refuge in Britain. Out of these brave vessels, only one managed to reach its destination safely - the B. P. Newton, a brand new 10,000-ton tanker. This incredible feat was made possible solely by her exceptional speed which enabled her to outpace German armed service craft that pursued her relentlessly. The B. P. Newton was part of a group of Kvarstad vessels - Norwegian ships held under arrest in Gothenburg after Germany invaded and occupied Norway. In this poignant image captured in March 1941, we see the B. P. Newton riding at anchor at a British port after successfully completing her daring dash for freedom. It serves as a testament not only to the resilience and determination of those involved but also symbolizes hope amidst an era dominated by war. This photograph is more than just a depiction of an oil tanker; it represents bravery and defiance against adversity on the high seas during one of humanity's darkest times. As we reflect upon this piece from Memory Lane Prints, let us remember all those who risked their lives for freedom and pay tribute to their unwavering spirit during World War II.
