RAF evacuate wounded partisans from Yugoslavia during the Second World War
RAF evacuate wounded partisans from Yugoslavia during the Second World War.
As well as dropping supplies on a large scale to Marshal Titos forces, the Royal Air Force are also assisting in the evacuation of wounded Partisans of the Yugoslav National Liberation Army from Yugoslavia to Italy, flying them to an air evacuation centre for preliminary medical attention before they are removed to base hospitals.
The RAF medical staff of the evacuation centre wear anti-typhus suits when receiving the wounded, to prevent them from picking up typhus lice, inevitably carried by the patients.
All aircraft are fumigated immediately after the wounded leave and no one is allowed to enter the machines for at least fifteen minutes.
Between May 1944 and the spring of 1945, some 50, 000 wounded and sick partisans and civilians were evacuated from Yugoslavia to Italy through the Balkan Air Force Casualty Evacuation Section.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment during the Second World War, showcasing the heroic efforts of the Royal Air Force (RAF) in evacuating wounded partisans from Yugoslavia. As Marshal Tito's forces received vital supplies dropped by the RAF, they also relied on their assistance to transport injured members of the Yugoslav National Liberation Army to safety in Italy. The image reveals an air evacuation center in Bari, southern Italy, where wounded partisans are being provided with preliminary medical attention before being transferred to base hospitals. To prevent any potential spread of typhus lice carried by patients, RAF medical staff at the center wear anti-typhus suits while receiving them. Notably, this operation involved immense coordination and meticulous precautions. After each evacuation flight departed with its wounded passengers, all aircraft were promptly fumigated and remained off-limits for at least fifteen minutes. Between May 1944 and spring 1945 alone, approximately 50,000 sick and injured partisans and civilians were successfully evacuated from Yugoslavia through the Balkan Air Force Casualty Evacuation Section. The compassion shown by Leading Aircraftman Gerry is evident as he offers tea to two female partisans among the stretcher cases at the evacuation center. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to both bravery and humanity amidst one of history's darkest chapters—the tireless dedication of RAF personnel who risked their lives to save others during wartime.
