Tests carried out by the Research and Experimental department on a Flat-topped shelter
Tests carried out by the Research and Experimental department on a Flat-topped shelter Type T.
This shelter was first tested by dropping a heavy block of concrete weighing 350 lbs from a height of 6 ft above the top. The flat top was only dented.
The shelter was then subjected to a second test in which a floor weighing 1800 lbs and pivoted on one side was dropped 6ft6ins and with a swinging action so that it struck one top edge of the shelter as it fell; simulating the manner in which the floor of a house usually collapses.
The steel angle at the top edge was bent.

Tests Carried Out on a Flat-Topped Shelter - Unyielding Resilience Amidst Destruction
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing the resilience of a flat-topped shelter during the tumultuous times of World War II. Taken by the Research and Experimental department on February 11th, 1941, this image tells an extraordinary tale of survival amidst chaos. Intriguingly, the first test involved dropping a hefty concrete block weighing 350 lbs from a height of 6 ft above the shelter's top. Astonishingly, despite such forceful impact, only a mere dent was left behind on its flat surface. This initial triumph prompted further examination. The second test pushed boundaries even further as an 1800-lb floor was dropped from a height of 6ft6ins with swinging action to simulate how house floors collapse during bombings. The result? A bent steel angle at the top edge—a testament to both the destructive power unleashed upon cities and towns during air raids and also to this particular shelter's ability to withstand such forces. This photograph not only serves as evidence of meticulous research conducted by experts but also symbolizes hope for those seeking refuge within these shelters. It stands as a reminder that even in times when destruction seemed inevitable, innovative engineering could provide solace and safety for countless lives caught in the crossfire. As we gaze upon this remarkable snapshot frozen in time, let us honor those who dedicated their efforts towards protecting civilians
