The Universal Carrier, also known as the Bren Gun Carrier and sometimes simply the Bren Carrier from the light machine gun armament, is a common name describing a family of light armoured tracked vehicles built by Vickers-Armstrongs and other companies.
The first carriers - the Bren Carrier and the Scout Carrier with specific roles - entered service before the war, but a single improved design that could replace these, the Universal, was introduced in 1940.
The vehicle was used widely by British Commonwealth forces during the Second World War. Universal Carriers were usually used for transporting personnel and equipment, mostly support weapons, or as machine gun platforms. With some 113, 000 built by 1960 in the United Kingdom and abroad, it is the most produced armoured fighting vehicle in history.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic military procession of army personnel passing through the bustling streets of Hull or its nearby area. The focal point of the image is the impressive Bren Gun Carrier, identified by its serial number T33548 and marked as number 41. As it rolls past a local hotel, this armored vehicle showcases its strength and significance during wartime. The Universal Carrier, also known as the Bren Gun Carrier due to its light machine gun armament, was a widely used tracked vehicle built by Vickers-Armstrongs and other companies. It played a vital role in British Commonwealth forces during World War II, serving primarily for transporting personnel and equipment such as support weapons. Additionally, it served as an effective machine gun platform. With over 113,000 units produced by 1960 in both the United Kingdom and abroad, the Universal Carrier holds the distinction of being the most manufactured armored fighting vehicle in history. Its versatility and reliability made it an invaluable asset on various battlefields throughout the war. Taken on February 23rd, 1942 – a time when tensions were high – this photograph provides us with a glimpse into an era defined by sacrifice and resilience. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints from Mirrorpix's collection, this image stands as a testament to those who bravely served their country during one of humanity's darkest periods.
