PICTURE 1 of the 14 SEQUENCE.
The Box Camera - a series of pictures demonstrating how to use it.

The back of the camera is opened and the inside frame drawn out as shown. The winding key will have to be pulled outwards in order to free it.
A box camera is a simple type of camera, the most common form being a cardboard or plastic box with a lens in one end and film at the other. They were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The lenses are often single element designs meniscus fixed focus lens, or in better quality box cameras a doublet lens with minimal (if any) possible adjustments to the aperture or shutter speeds. Because of the inability to adjust focus, the small lens aperture and the low sensitivity of the sensitive materials available, these cameras work best in brightly lit day-lit scenes when the subject is within the hyperfocal distance for the lens and of subjects that move little during the exposure. Eventually, box cameras with photographic flash, shutter and aperture adjustment were introduced, allowing indoor photos.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the first step in using a box camera from a 14-sequence series. The image showcases the process of loading film into the camera, providing valuable insight into how these simple yet revolutionary devices were operated. In this particular shot, we see the back of the box camera being opened, revealing its inner frame. To load film, one must carefully draw out this frame while simultaneously pulling outwards on the winding key to free it. This intricate maneuver was necessary for capturing moments with these early cameras. Box cameras gained immense popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to their simplicity and affordability. Typically constructed from cardboard or plastic, they featured a lens at one end and film at the other. However, their fixed focus lenses limited adjustments to aperture or shutter speeds. These cameras thrived under well-lit conditions when subjects remained still during exposure due to their small lens apertures and low sensitivity materials available at that time. Nevertheless, advancements allowed for later models with flash capabilities as well as adjustable shutters and apertures for indoor photography. This photograph was taken on March 1st, 1933 by Mirrorpix—a testament to both its historical significance and enduring charm captured through Memory Lane Prints' collection.
