EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Signalman Raymond Short, a young and determined individual hailing from Fossway, Walkergate in Newcastle. After completing his education at Walkergate Secondary Modern School, Raymond made the courageous decision to join the Army. With rigorous training as a signal operator under his belt, he found himself stationed at the esteemed 30 Signal Regiment in Dorset. However, this image holds more than just Raymond's military journey. The previous year had seen him embark on an extraordinary adventure with the Royal Navy aboard the impressive 12,000-ton assault ship HMS Fearless. During its momentous visit to the River Tyne, which lasted for ten days, locals were thrilled to witness such a magnificent vessel docked on their shores. Amongst Fearless' crew were two fellow North-Easterners who undoubtedly shared Raymond's sense of pride and camaraderie - Graeme Lawson from South Gosforth and John Ramm from Newbiggin. Graeme specialized in satellite Skynet operations while John had recently completed his training before joining the ship. This photograph not only encapsulates a significant moment in history but also serves as a reminder of these brave individuals who dedicated themselves to serving their country during this era of change and progress. It is through images like these that we can honor their sacrifices and appreciate their contributions to our nation's defense forces.
