EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1976, we are transported back to a time when youth culture and style were at the forefront of societal discussions. The image captures a group of rebellious boys known as the "Kojak kids" who dared to challenge the norms of their South Wales comprehensive school. Their audacious entrance into school, sucking lollipops and sporting dark glasses, immediately caught the attention of Mr Basil Phillips, the headmaster at St Cenydd School in Caerphilly. Outraged by their Kojak-inspired haircuts and cheeky attitudes, he took matters into his own hands. Mr Phillips transformed from an ordinary headmaster into an unexpected hitman as he suspended these defiant boys for three weeks until their hair had grown to what he deemed a "reasonable length". Among those affected were Andrew Horne and Leslie Davies from Francis Street, along with Colin Woods from Llan Road - all fifteen years old at that time. This snapshot not only reflects the fashion trends and youth culture prevalent in 1970s South Wales but also highlights how authority figures grappled with maintaining discipline amidst changing times. As we gaze upon Michael Anderson, Tony Preece, Allan Gittins, Colin Woods (one of the shaven heads), Russell Tovey, Andrew Horne (another shaven head), Stephen Porter, Terry Miller - we can't help but wonder about their individual stories within this larger narrative.
