Tom Ennis usher who has been opening and closing the gates of Leinster House since 1922
Tom Ennis usher who has been opening and closing the gates of Leinster House since 1922. The beautiful wrought iron gates are in keeping with the simplicity of the 18th century mansion
The house was originally known as Kildare House after James Fitzgerald, the Earl of Kildare, who commissioned it to be built between 1745-47: James Fitzgerald set out to create the stateliest of Dublin Georgian Mansions to reflect his eminent position in Irish society.
On becoming the Duke of Leinster in 1776 (Dublin and Kildare are in the province of Leinster) the house was renamed Leinster House.
The designer of Leinster House was the architect Richard Cassels (or Castle), who was born in Hesse-Cassel in Germany. The design is characteristic of buildings of the period in Ireland and England. It has been claimed that it formed a model for the design of the White House, the residence of the President of the United States. Circa 1950

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless elegance of Leinster House, with its magnificent wrought iron gates and rich historical significance. Standing proudly since 1922, Tom Ennis has faithfully served as the usher responsible for opening and closing these grand gates. Originally known as Kildare House, this 18th-century mansion was commissioned by James Fitzgerald, the Earl of Kildare. His vision was to create a Georgian masterpiece that would reflect his esteemed position in Irish society. The house's name changed to Leinster House when Fitzgerald became the Duke of Leinster in 1776, symbolizing its connection to Dublin and Kildare within the province of Leinster. Architect Richard Cassels (or Castle), born in Hesse-Cassel, Germany, designed this architectural gem that showcases characteristic features found in buildings from this era across Ireland and England. Interestingly, it is believed that Cassels' design may have influenced the iconic White House in Washington D. C. , serving as a model for the residence of the President of the United States. This particular print dates back to circa 1950 and offers a glimpse into history captured by an unknown photographer. It serves as a reminder not only of Tom Ennis' dedicated service but also highlights Leinster House's enduring beauty and cultural significance throughout generations.
