EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from April 1953, we are transported back to the exhilarating world of horseracing at Flagg Moor, near Buxton. The Point to Point races were in full swing, and the atmosphere was electric with anticipation. The focus of the image is Mrs. W. Hall astride her magnificent steed, Gilded Cage (No. 6), as they take charge of the Hartington Plate ladies race. With determination etched on her face, Mrs. Hall skillfully guides Gilded Cage over each jump with grace and precision. However, their lead is not secure as another formidable rider enters the frame - Mrs. A. E Dickinson atop "Turkish Prince". As they approach towards the end of the race, Turkish Prince gains momentum and overtakes Gilded Cage effortlessly. At this pivotal moment frozen in time by Mirrorpix's lens, we witness a thrilling battle between these two equestrian powerhouses. Gilded Cage leads Turkish Prince at the first jump for a second time round before ultimately succumbing to defeat. This photo encapsulates both the beauty and intensity of horse racing in its heyday during the 1950s. It serves as a reminder that even in moments of triumph or setback on the track, there is an undeniable allure that keeps us captivated by this timeless sport.
