The Gloster Napier VI "Golden Arrow". The last of the Gloster Schneider Trophy

The Gloster Napier VI " Golden Arrow". The last of the Gloster Schneider Trophy series and the first Gloster monoplane, this machine was built to take part in the 1929 Schneider Trophy Contest at Calshot. The Napier Lion engine had been boosted up to such an extent that engine failure prevented participation in the race, which was won by the Supermarine Rolls Royce S6 with an average speed of 328.63 m.p.h. However, in subsequent speed trails the Gloster VI attained an official speed record of 336.3. m.p.h.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the iconic Gloster Napier VI "Golden Arrow" a significant aircraft in aviation history. This remarkable machine marked the end of the Gloster Schneider Trophy series and also served as the first-ever monoplane by Gloster. Constructed specifically for the 1929 Schneider Trophy Contest at Calshot, this seaplane was poised to showcase its exceptional capabilities. However, despite having an extensively enhanced Napier Lion engine, unfortunate engine failure prevented it from participating in the race. Although unable to compete in the contest, this extraordinary aircraft did not go unnoticed. In subsequent speed trials, it achieved an official speed record of 336.3 mph—an impressive feat that solidified its place in aviation lore. This photograph transports us back to September 1929 when this magnificent flying boat stood proudly on display. Its sleek design and powerful presence symbolize innovation and progress within the field of aviation during that era. As we admire this image today, we are reminded of a time when races and competitions fueled excitement and pushed boundaries in aerospace technology. The Golden Arrow represents both triumphs and setbacks—a testament to human ingenuity and determination. Transport enthusiasts, aviation historians, or anyone captivated by early flight will appreciate owning a piece of history with this stunning print from Memory Lane Prints captured by Mirrorpix—forever preserving an important chapter in our collective memory.
