Fashion 1960 s. The acid test for British fashion. It
Fashion 1960 s. The acid test for British fashion. Its the acid test for top British fashion today (Monday 4-5-64). For foreign buyers are being shown the best autumn styles that London Fashion House Group can produce - including the one pictured hare. More than 550 buyers are in London for the show - and the fashion firms are hoping for orders worth £ 2, 000, 000. At a preview on Sunday (3-5-64) the Group showed clothes that included something for everybody. And that includes every girl and the buyers from thirty-nine counties. It was good to see the number of clothes that would not look out of place on the over-twenty-fives. But theres a gloomier side. Prices of wool outfits are up. Mr. Frederick Starke, a leading member of the Group, explained that the price of wool had inc-reased by 15 to 20 per cent. Last time the foreign buyers were here, they spent £ 1900, 000. The Americans - the biggest customers - paid out £ 300, 650 - twice the amount they spent at the Paris couture shows in January. For an evening out...The long Regency-strip skirt is made of Welsh wool and the black blouse is of delicate broderie Anglaise. The outfit, by Sambo, will cost about £ 8. May 1964 P017558

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the swinging 1960s, where British fashion was put to the ultimate test - an acid test that would shape the industry for years to come. This print captures a momentous occasion in London's fashion history, as foreign buyers from thirty-nine countries gather to witness the best autumn styles presented by the esteemed London Fashion House Group. With over 550 buyers eagerly anticipating this showcase, hopes are high for orders worth a staggering £2 million. The image showcases one of these exquisite designs, representing the epitome of top British fashion at that time. It is truly a sight to behold. The preview held on Sunday delighted attendees with its diverse range of clothing options suitable for every taste and age group. Notably, there were numerous pieces that even women over twenty-five could appreciate and wear confidently. However, amidst all this excitement lies a gloomier reality - rising prices of wool outfits due to increased costs in production. Mr. Frederick Starke, a prominent member of the Group, explained how wool prices had surged by 15-20%. Despite this setback, previous records indicate immense spending by foreign buyers during their last visit amounting to £1.9 million; American customers alone splurged an astonishing £300,650 - twice what they spent at Paris couture shows earlier that year. Intriguingly showcased within this snapshot is an elegant evening ensemble: a long Regency-strip skirt made from Welsh wool paired with a delicate broderie Anglaise black blouse designed by Sambo. This stunning outfit carries an approximate price tag of £8. This remarkable photograph transports us back in time while reminding us of both triumphs and challenges faced by British fashion during this iconic era.
