This poignant photograph captures the grim reality of life for refugees in Thessaloniki, Greece, during the First World War. Circa 1917, the city had become a bustling hub for displaced persons from various backgrounds, fleeing the conflict that ravaged Europe. In this image, a group of refugees huddle together in the Vardar Quarter, a neighborhood that had become a temporary shelter for thousands. Thessaloniki, also known as Salonica or Salonika, had long been a melting pot of cultures, and the influx of refugees only added to its rich diversity. Yet, the conditions in which they lived were far from ideal. With limited resources and few prospects for employment, many refugees struggled to survive.
