Brim Brimmed Equality Join Metropolitan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment when women first began to join the London Metropolitan Police Force in 1916. The image features a Women Police Service (WPS) officer proudly wearing her uniform, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of gender equality in law enforcement. During wartime, with many men away fighting, the Metropolitan Police were forced to consider the recruitment of women to maintain public order. The WPS uniform, as seen in this photograph, consisted of a dark blue tunic, a white blouse, a dark blue skirt, and a brimmed hat with a 'W' insignia. The hat's brim was designed to protect the officers from the elements and was an essential part of their uniform. The Women Police Service was established to perform non-uniformed duties, such as dealing with women and children, but they were later granted the right to wear uniforms and carry batons. This change allowed them to take on more responsibilities and be recognized as full members of the police force. The introduction of women into the police force was a groundbreaking development in the history of law enforcement. It challenged societal norms and paved the way for future generations of women to serve in various roles within the police force and other professions. This photograph is a testament to the courage and determination of these early pioneers who broke down barriers and opened doors for women in law enforcement.
