Verderer at the gate of Royal Enclosure, Ascot

One of the Royal Foresters, or Verderers, of Windsor Park, performing his annual duty of keeping guard at the gate of the Royal Enclosure during Ascot Week, access to which was one of the most exclusive invitations during the Season. Formerly, the duties of a Verderer of the Kings forest were, in the formidable words of Blackstone, to preserve the vert and venison, keep the assizes, view, receive, and enroll attachments and presentments of all manner of trespasses, a task from which keeping the gate at Ascot would be a pleasant change indeed. Date: 1928

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the 1920s, a Verderer of Windsor Park stands proudly at the gate of the Royal Enclosure during Ascot Week. Dressed in traditional attire, including a long, red robe and a tall, fur-trimmed hat, the Verderer embodies the rich history and tradition of the Royal Forests and the exclusive world of the British aristocracy. The Verderers, also known as the Royal Foresters, were responsible for the management and protection of the King's forests, including Windsor Great Park. Their duties ranged from preserving the forests' "vert" (vegetation) and "venison" to enforcing the law and maintaining order. However, keeping the gate at Ascot during the racing season was a welcome change from their more formidable tasks. Ascot Week was one of the most anticipated events of the British social calendar during the 1920s, and access to the Royal Enclosure was an exclusive invitation only extended to the upper echelons of society. The Verderer's presence at the gate served as a reminder of the long-standing traditions and the importance of maintaining order and respect for the monarchy. The photograph captures the essence of the 1920s, an era of elegance, opulence, and tradition. The Verderer's stoic demeanor and impeccable uniform add to the image's allure, transporting us back in time to a world of horse racing, grandeur, and royalty. This photograph is a testament to the enduring traditions and the rich history of Ascot and the British monarchy.
