This stunning handcolored botanical copperplate engraving is a beautiful representation of Turnip (Brassica rapa), Cabbage (Brassica oleracea), and Hare's Ear Mustard (Sisymbrium irio) from Joshua Hamilton's Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, published in London in 1792. The intricate details of each plant are expertly captured in this engraving, which was enlarged from Sir John Hill's original herbal. Turnip, a root vegetable, is depicted at the top left of the image. Its large, bulbous root is surrounded by leaves, some of which are curled up as if in the process of being harvested. Cabbage, a cruciferous vegetable, is shown in the center of the print. Its large, round head is surrounded by a rosette of leaves, some of which are wilted and others are fresh and green. Hare's Ear Mustard, a pungent herb, is shown at the bottom right of the image. Its small, yellow flowers are in bloom, and its leaves are depicted in various stages of growth. Botanical illustrations like this one were an essential part of the scientific and medical communities during the 18th and 19th centuries. They were used to accurately document and identify new plant species, as well as to illustrate the medicinal properties of known plants. This particular engraving is a testament to the beauty and intricacy of nature, as well as the skill of the engraver and the dedication of the botanists and physicians who created and compiled such comprehensive works as Culpeper's English Family Physician.
