This illustration is taken from Plate 26 of Ranarum, a comprehensive work on natural history by August Johann Rösel von Rosenhof, published between 1758 and 1763. The top left figure showcases a detailed and intricately rendered Toad (Anura: Bufo), a member of the Lissamphibia class and the order Anura, which includes over 6,000 known species. Toads are characterized by their dry, warty skin, which helps them absorb water and moisture from their environment. This illustration, created during the 18th century, showcases the Toad's unique features, including its large, bulging eyes, wide mouth, and distinctive parotoid glands, which produce a toxic secretion. The illustration is an engraving, with the original drawing believed to be in watercolor.
