EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph, titled "Summer and Underground Winter Houses of the Itelmen in Kamchatka," is an intriguing glimpse into the unique living conditions of the Itelmen people, an indigenous community residing in the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia. The image, taken from Friedrich Wilhelm Goedsche's Complete Gallery of Peoples in True Pictures, published between 1835 and 1840, showcases the contrasting seasons of the Itelmen's existence. On the left side of the print, we see a group of Itelmen people in traditional summer attire, surrounded by their temporary dwellings. The structures, made of animal skins and wooden frames, are easily transportable and provide shelter during the warmer months. The Itelmen are depicted in colorful clothing, adorned with fur and feathers, as they engage in various activities, such as hunting and fishing. On the right side of the print, we are transported to the underground winter houses, or "kangas," that the Itelmen inhabit during the harsh winter months. These subterranean dwellings are dug into the ground and provide insulation from the extreme cold. The Itelmen are shown huddled around a fire, using animal skins as blankets and utensils made from bone. The ethnographic and anthropological significance of this print lies in its portrayal of the Itelmen people and their adaptive living conditions. The contrast between their summer and winter homes highlights their resourcefulness and resilience in the face of challenging environmental conditions. The print also offers a glimpse into their customs, costumes, and historical way of life, providing valuable insights into the rich cultural heritage of the Itelmen people.
