Armistice Ceremony Coffin Procession Remembrance Respect Tomb Unknown Warrior Wreath

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image, taken on Armistice Day, 11 November 1920, captures a poignant moment in history as King George V pays his respects to the Unknown Warrior. The Unknown Warrior, an unidentified soldier killed in the line of duty during the First World War, was brought back to Britain from France for a national funeral. The coffin, draped in the Union Flag, was carried on a gun carriage through the streets of London, passing the Cenotaph war memorial, where the King placed a wreath in honor of the fallen soldier. The solemn procession continued to Westminster Abbey, where the Unknown Warrior was interred in the newly created Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. The image of the King laying a wreath on the coffin is a powerful symbol of respect and remembrance for the sacrifices made by the soldiers during the Great War. The gun salutes and the silence observed throughout the country added to the solemnity of the occasion, marking the end of the war and the beginning of a new era of peace and reflection.
