EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the Spanish flagship Santísima Trinidad, a formidable war vessel with an impressive four gundecks and a total of 136 cannons. Launched in the historic Spanish port city of Ferrol in 1797, the Santísima Trinidad was a true marvel of Spanish naval technology and craftsmanship of the late 18th century. With a length of over 50 meters and a crew of around 1,200 men, this first-rate ship was a key element of the Spanish Armada during the Napoleonic Wars. The print is an illustration after a watercolor by the renowned Spanish artist Alejo Berlinguero (1750-1810), meticulously engraved to preserve the intricate details of the ship's design. The image showcases the Santísima Trinidad in all its glory, with its grand sails billowing in the wind, cannons ready for action, and the ornate bridge adorned with the Spanish royal coat of arms. Sadly, the Santísima Trinidad's illustrious career came to an end in the fateful Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805. Engaged in a fierce battle against the British Royal Navy, the Spanish flagship was ultimately defeated and sank, marking a significant turning point in the war. Today, this historic print serves as a testament to the grandeur and power of the Spanish naval fleet during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is now part of the prestigious collection of the Navy Museum in Madrid, Spain, a fitting tribute to the rich maritime history of the country.
