EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures a poignant moment in Spanish history as Queen Isabella II (1830-1868) bestows a scapular upon General Lepoldo O'Donnell y Joras (1809-1867) before his departure to Africa during the War of Africa in 1859. The War of Africa, also known as the Spanish Moroccan War, was a military campaign initiated by Spain to reassert its control over its North African territories, which had been under threat from the French and the Sultan of Morocco. The scene is set in Madrid, Spain, and the image is filled with a sense of solemnity and national pride. Queen Isabella II, dressed in a grand, colorful gown and adorned with the jewels of the Spanish crown, stands before her trusted general, who is depicted in military uniform, with a determined expression on his face. The queen's hands are seen resting on a small table, as she places the scapular, a religious amulet, into O'Donnell's hands. The people in the background, including other military officers and courtiers, look on with a mix of reverence and anticipation. The vertical composition of the image emphasizes the height and grandeur of the queen and the importance of the moment. The use of black and white in the engraving adds to the historical and timeless feel of the image, transporting us back to a bygone era in Spanish history. Lepoldo O'Donnell would go on to become a national hero in Spain, leading the Spanish forces to several victories in the War of Africa and securing Spain's territorial claims in North Africa.
