Distinguished from the Viol family by the neck being a prolongation of the body, instead as of an attachment to it. Cigarette Fiddle Fiddles Instrument Instruments Narrow Neck Piece Pocket Solid String Stringed Strings Thin Musical Pochette Rebec

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a rare and intriguing musical instrument known as a Sordino, or pocket fiddle. Dating back to the late 19th or early 20th century, this instrument is a diminutive version of the medieval Rebec, which originated in the Near East and is also referred to as the Gigue. The Sordino is distinguished from the Viol family by its unique construction, where the neck is a prolongation of the body, rather than an attachment. The Sordino, known to the French as a pochette, was carried in a pocket and was used primarily by traveling musicians and minstrels. Its narrow, long, thin design makes it a compact and portable alternative to larger stringed instruments. The solid construction of the Sordino houses three strings, which are tensioned between the bridge and the pegs at the end of the instrument's neck. The history of the Sordino is rich and fascinating. It was in use until the beginning of the 18th century when it was replaced by diminutive viols, which became popular among dancing-masters. The Italian term 'sordino' refers to a mute or damper used on any instrument. In this photograph, the Sordino is seen resting on a table, with a cigarette and a card nearby, adding an air of nostalgia and intrigue. The close-up perspective allows us to appreciate the intricate details of this unique and historical instrument. The Sordino's delicate strings, narrow bridge, and elegant shape are all on display, making this a fascinating glimpse into the past of musical instrument history.
