EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir William MacCormac (1836-1901): Pioneering Irish Surgeon and Medical Educator This portrait captures the distinguished visage of Sir William MacCormac, an esteemed Irish surgeon and medical educator of the late 19th century. MacCormac was born on February 11, 1836, in County Cork, Ireland, and studied medicine at University College Cork and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He later continued his education in Paris, France, under the tutelage of renowned surgeons. MacCormac's career was marked by numerous groundbreaking achievements in the field of surgery. In 1864, he performed the first successful operation for appendicitis in Ireland, using a new technique that reduced the mortality rate significantly. He also introduced the use of antiseptics in Irish hospitals, revolutionizing surgical practices and reducing the incidence of post-operative infections. MacCormac's commitment to medical education was equally noteworthy. He served as the first professor of surgery at Queen's University Belfast and later became the first professor of surgery at University College Dublin. He was instrumental in establishing the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and served as its first president from 1882 to 1885. This photograph is a testament to MacCormac's enduring legacy in the medical community. His pioneering surgical techniques and dedication to medical education continue to influence modern medical practices. The portrait's intricate details, from MacCormac's piercing gaze to the meticulously arranged folds of his clothing, offer a glimpse into the life of a man who left an indelible mark on the history of medicine.
