EDITORS COMMENTS
This sculpture showcases the powerful bond between Pharaoh Ramesses II and the deity Ptah, showcasing the rich religious traditions of ancient Egypt during the New Kingdom period. Dated back to the 19th Dynasty, around 1290-1224 BC, this granite sculpture was originally housed in the Temple of Ptah in Memphis. The Pharaoh, depicted with a regal beard and adorned with the false beard of office, is shown in a seated position, while the god Ptah, identified by his distinctive shaved head and the Ankh and Djed symbols, stands before him. Ptah, the god of craftsmen and the creator of the world, is shown granting the pharaoh divine power and protection. The intricate hieroglyphics inscribed on the sculpture further emphasize the religious significance of the piece. The celestial symbols and mythological motifs suggest the pharaoh's connection to the divine realm and his role as a divine ruler. This magnificent sculpture is now part of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek's collection in Copenhagen, Denmark, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of ancient Egypt and its enduring influence on our understanding of the ancient world.
