1876 Birchard Candidate Hayes Republican Rutherford

EDITORS COMMENTS
Rutherford Birchard Hayes: The 19th President of the United States (1822-1893) This striking portrait captures Rutherford B. Hayes, a prominent Republican figure and the 19th President of the United States, during his campaign for the presidency in 1876. Hayes, born on October 4, 1822, in Delaware, Ohio, rose to prominence as a Union officer during the American Civil War, serving with distinction in the Battle of South Mountain and the Battle of the Wilderness. After the war, Hayes returned to Ohio and became a successful lawyer and politician. In 1864, he was elected Governor of Ohio, and in 1868, he was the Republican nominee for Vice President, but the party lost the election. However, Hayes' dedication and perseverance paid off when he was finally nominated for the presidency in 1876. Hayes' presidency (1877-1881) was marked by several significant accomplishments. He oversaw the end of Reconstruction, a period of military rule in the South following the Civil War. Hayes believed that the time had come for the South to govern itself, and he withdrew federal troops from the region, effectively ending Reconstruction. Additionally, Hayes began the efforts that led to civil service reform. He believed that the civil service should be based on merit rather than political patronage, and he established the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act in 1883, which created a merit-based civil service system. Despite his efforts to reconcile the divisions left over from the Civil War and Reconstruction, Hayes' presidency was not without controversy. The disputed election of 1876, in which Hayes won after a compromise with the Democrats, left a lasting stain on his legacy. Nevertheless, Hayes remains an important figure in American history, and this portrait serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to the country during a time of great change and turmoil.
