RSS Discovery in the Antarctic

RSS Discovery in the Antarctic. Launched in 1901 and designed for Antarctic research, she was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built in Britain. Her first mission was the British National Antarctic Expedition, carrying Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their first, successful journey to the Antarctic, known as the Discovery Expedition. In 1936 she was presented to the Boy Scouts Association as a static training ship for Sea Scouts in London.

EDITORS COMMENTS
RSS Discovery in the Antarctic: A Vintage Testament to Exploration and Scouting Traditions This evocative photograph captures the RSS Discovery, a historic three-masted wooden ship, bravely navigating the icy waters of the Antarctic during the early 1900s. Launched in Britain in 1901, the RSS Discovery was specifically designed for Antarctic research, marking the last traditional wooden ship to be built for such a purpose in the country. The RSS Discovery holds significant historical importance as it was the vessel that carried the British National Antarctic Expedition, led by Sir Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton, on their first successful journey to the Antarctic. This expedition, famously known as the Discovery Expedition, began in 1901 and resulted in numerous scientific discoveries, including the discovery of the magnetic South Pole. After an illustrious career in polar exploration, the RSS Discovery was presented to the Boy Scouts Association in 1936 as a static training ship for Sea Scouts in London. This image, taken circa 1904, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the ship's impressive masts and sails against a backdrop of snow-covered icebergs and the vast, cold expanse of the Antarctic. The RSS Discovery's enduring legacy continues to inspire new generations of explorers and scouts, reminding us of the spirit of adventure and the importance of preserving our natural world.
