November 22, 1947: A Royal Romance Blossoms - The Illustrated London News presents this evocative cover image of HRH Princess Elizabeth of York (later Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II) and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten (later His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh) on the eve of their wedding day. The young couple, who met in 1939 during the Royal Naval College Review, are shown in a tender moment, their eyes locked in a loving gaze, as they prepare to embark on their lifelong journey together. Philip, then Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, had been serving in the Royal Navy since the outbreak of World War II and had been stationed in Malta when he first met the future Queen. Their engagement was announced on July 9, 1947, and the wedding took place on November 20, 1947, at Westminster Abbey. This iconic photograph, taken just before their nuptials, captures the essence of a fairytale romance and the promise of a new chapter in British royal history.
