The Avro Shackleton, named after the renowned polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, was a versatile maritime patrol aircraft designed and manufactured by the Avro Aircraft Company in the United Kingdom. This particular aircraft, VW131, was the second prototype built, and it served as a crucial stepping stone towards the development of the production models. The Avro Shackleton MR1 was a twin-engine, long-range maritime patrol aircraft, primarily used for anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue missions. Its distinctive features included a large radome under the fuselage, which housed the Marconi Type 277 search radar, and a large tailfin to improve stability during long patrols. The aircraft was also equipped with sonobuoy equipment to aid in the detection and location of underwater sounds emitted by submarines.
