From Kingsford Lawrence Monoplane Twin Wackett Designed Smith

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, three pioneering figures of Australian aviation stand in front of LJW6 Codock, the first twin-engine monoplane designed by Lawrence James Wackett. The year was 1932, and the innovation represented by this aircraft was groundbreaking. From left to right, we see Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, Lawrence James Wackett, and White and Alsopp. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, an Australian aviator, holds the distinction of being the first person to fly solo from Australia to the United States. His record-breaking flight in 1935, which he completed with co-pilot Charles Ulm, took only 41 hours and 19 minutes. Lawrence James Wackett, the designer of the LJW6 Codock, was a visionary engineer who was determined to push the boundaries of aviation technology. The LJW6 Codock was a significant departure from traditional aircraft design, featuring twin engines and a monoplane configuration. This design offered increased efficiency, range, and payload capacity, making it an attractive option for long-distance flights. White and Alsopp, the men standing with Wackett and Kingsford Smith, were likely representatives of the company that built the LJW6 Codock. Their presence underscores the collaborative nature of aviation innovation during this period, with engineers, pilots, and manufacturers working together to advance the field. The LJW6 Codock was a testament to the ingenuity and determination of these pioneering figures in Australian aviation. Although the plane was not put into commercial use, it represented an important step forward in the development of long-range, twin-engine aircraft. This photograph captures a moment in time when the future of aviation was being shaped by the vision and hard work of a few dedicated individuals.
