EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, a de Havilland DH86, registration G-ACPL, takes center stage in the foreground at Croydon Airport in March 1935. The DH86, also known as the Dragon Rapide, was a popular British twin-engine transport aircraft of the 1930s, renowned for its versatility and reliability. Surrounding the Dragon Rapide are several other notable aircraft of the era. To the left, a Handley Page HP42, registration G-aXja, can be seen. The HP42 was a four-engine airliner that was a significant step forward in aviation technology at the time, offering greater passenger capacity and comfort. In the background, two Short L17s, G-ACJJ, Scylla, and G-ACJK, Syrinx, are lined up. The Short Brothers L17 was a successful flying boat design, which was used for both passenger and cargo transport. Its distinctive hull design made it well-suited for amphibious takeoffs and landings. Finally, a Boulton & Paul P71A, registration G-ACOX, Boadicea, can be seen to the right of the image. The P71A was a single-engine biplane designed for the Royal Air Force, but it also saw use in civilian hands as a transport and trainer aircraft. This photograph captures a moment in time when aviation was still a new and exciting industry, and these aircraft represented the cutting edge of technology and design. The diversity of types on display, from the sleek and modern DH86 to the amphibious L17s and the versatile P71A, highlights the rapid pace of innovation in the field during the interwar period.
