Alcock Browns Clifden Galway Heather Macpherson Major Vickers Vimy 1919
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken on June 16, 1919, in the Derrygimla bog near Clifden, County Galway, Ireland, Alcock and Brown's Vickers Vimy aircraft stands proudly amidst the rugged terrain. The intrepid aviators, John Alcock and Arthur Brown, had made headlines just a few days earlier when they completed the first non-stop transatlantic flight from Newfoundland to Ireland. In this image, we see the Vimy, a two-engine biplane, surrounded by a small group of people. From left to right, we have Mrs. Macpherson, Major J.A. Heather, and Mrs. Heather. Major Heather played a crucial role in the successful landing of the Vimy in Ireland, as he had been instrumental in arranging the use of a local aerodrome for the landing. The photograph captures the sense of excitement and accomplishment that surrounded Alcock and Brown's achievement. The Vimy, which had been used for the transatlantic flight, had been transported to Ireland by rail and then flown to Clifden, where it was met with great fanfare. The aircraft had been damaged during the landing, but the damage was minor, and it was soon repaired and flown back to England. This photograph is a testament to the spirit of adventure and innovation that characterized the early days of aviation. It also serves as a reminder of the important role that Ireland played in the history of aviation, with Clifden becoming a significant hub for aviation activity in the years that followed.
