Granville Lambert Macrobertson Monocoupe Ruth Start
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the excitement and anticipation at the start of the MacRobertson England to Australia Air Race of October 1934. The image features four distinctive aircraft lined up on the runway, ready for takeoff. At the center of the photograph is the Granville R-6H, registration number NR14307 and call sign QED. This British-built biplane was piloted by Captain Harold Granville and co-piloted by F.E. "Ginger" Lacey. The Granville R-6H was a sturdy and reliable machine, known for its robust design and powerful engine. To the left of the Granville is the Lambert Monocoupe 145, registration number NC501W and nicknamed "Baby Ruth." This American-built monoplane was piloted by American aviator Roscoe Turner, a seasoned racer and record-breaker. The Monocoupe was known for its sleek design and agility, making it a formidable competitor in the race. The other two aircraft in the photograph are also worth noting. To the right of the Granville is another Lambert Monocoupe, registration number NC5020 and call sign MILK. Piloted by Australian aviator Charles Ulm, this Monocoupe was a late entry into the race and was making its racing debut. The fourth aircraft, to the far right of the photograph, is a mysterious unmarked monoplane. Its identity remains unknown, adding an element of intrigue to this historic photograph. The MacRobertson England to Australia Air Race was a grueling contest that tested the mettle of both man and machine. The race covered over 11,000 miles and lasted for 10 days, taking the competitors across treacherous terrain and challenging weather conditions. This photograph captures the spirit of adventure and determination that defined the race and the era of aviation history.
