A motor soup kitchen presented to the Red Cross Society by Messrs. Burberrys of Haymarket in 1915. The vehicle was of a very compact and serviceable design and had been made to a special specification approved by the Society and supervised by the engineer of the R.A.C.. The caption states that, " Hitherto the title shown on the car, " The Burberry, " has only been associated with teh firms weatherproof topcoats. The firm also, of course, provided the indispensible trench coat for officers during the Great War. Date: 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in history as it showcases a motor soup kitchen donated by the renowned British fashion house, Burberry, to the Red Cross Society in 1915. Hitherto, the title "The Burberry" had been synonymous with the firm's iconic weatherproof topcoats. However, during the First World War, Burberry's contribution extended beyond fashion, as they also provided the indispensable trench coats for officers. In this image, we see a compact and serviceable van, custom-designed for the Red Cross Society, under the supervision of the Royal Automobile Club's engineer. The vehicle, a testament to Burberry's commitment to supporting the war effort, was outfitted with a soup kitchen to provide sustenance to those in need. The motor soup kitchen was an essential addition to the Red Cross Society's resources, enabling them to travel and distribute food more efficiently. The van's design was unique, created to meet the Society's specifications, and was a crucial asset during the challenging conditions of the First World War. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, highlighting the innovative ways in which businesses, like Burberry, supported the war effort and provided essential services to their communities. The motor soup kitchen represented a powerful symbol of hope and compassion during a time of great need, and its legacy continues to inspire us today.
