EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Prince George, Duke of Kent (1902-1942), proudly announces his engagement to Princess Marina, daughter of Prince Nicolas of Greece, on September 27, 1934. The Duke of Kent, the fourth son and fifth child of King George V and Queen Mary, cut a dashing figure in his military uniform, while Princess Marina, resplendent in an elegant gown, beamed with joy. The announcement of their engagement brought great excitement to the British public, as the Duke of Kent was a beloved member of the Royal Family. His engagement to Princess Marina, who was also a member of European nobility, further solidified the strong ties between the British monarchy and the European royal houses. Tragically, the Duke of Kent's happiness was short-lived. On August 25, 1942, he was killed in a military air-crash during a reconnaissance mission over the English Channel. His death marked the first death of a member of the Royal Family on active service for 500 years, and was deeply mourned by the British people. This poignant photograph captures a moment of joy and hope in the midst of the challenges and uncertainties of the 1930s, before the darkness of war engulfed Europe and the world. It serves as a reminder of the human stories behind the historic events and the enduring power of love and family, even in the face of adversity.
