Born as Alfred Henry George Henry Charles Gordon-Lennox on March 24, 1865, he was the 9th Duke of Richmond and 8th Duke of Lennox, as well as the Earl of Darnley and Baron Settrington. Gordon-Lennox's aristocratic background did not hinder his political career, as he was a prominent figure in the British Conservative Party. Prior to his appointment as Treasurer of the Household, he served as a soldier and a courtier. His military service included the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the Second Boer War. Despite his Conservative affiliations, Gordon-Lennox's political beliefs were not strictly defined. He was known for his liberal views on certain issues, such as education and social reform. His tenure as Treasurer of the Household was marked by his successful implementation of financial reforms, which helped to strengthen the British economy during a time of economic instability.
