Royal Aircraft Factory F. E. 2 (second aircraft)

Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2, powered by an air-cooled 70hp Renault V-8 engine, (R.A.F. - Royal Aircraft Factory), (F.E. - Farman Experimental). This was the second F.E.2, with revised tail surfaces and the outer wings copied from the B.E.2. Neither of the two F.E.2s were fitted with fins, which, unsurprisingly led to instability in yaw, which brought about its end on 23 February 1914, when it span to the ground killing Ronald Kemps passenger. Date: 1913

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2, the second prototype of this experimental aircraft produced by the Royal Aircraft Factory in 1913. Powered by an air-cooled 70hp Renault V-8 engine, this aircraft, also known as the Farman Experimental 2 (F.E.2), was a significant step forward in aviation technology during the early days of flight. The F.E.2 featured revised tail surfaces and outer wings copied from the successful B.E.2, making it an intriguing blend of innovation and proven design. However, one notable absence in its design was the fitting of fins, which unfortunately led to instability in yaw. This issue proved to be a fatal flaw, as on 23 February 1914, the F.E.2, piloted by Lieutenant W.E. Johns, spun out of control during a test flight, killing its passenger, Ronald Kemps. Despite its tragic end, the F.E.2 holds an important place in aviation history as a transitional aircraft that pushed the boundaries of design and technology. Its legacy serves as a reminder of the risks and challenges faced during the early days of flight, as engineers and pilots worked tirelessly to advance the field and make the skies accessible to all.
