EDITORS COMMENTS
North American AT-6D Texan N7448C, serial number 121-422 and former military identification 44-81494, is seen taxying at San Fernando Airfield on May 7, 1965. This North American AT-6D Texan, a twin-engine advanced trainer aircraft, was manufactured by North American Aviation in 1952. The AT-6 series, also known as the "Warren Commission" or "Mosquito" trainer, was widely used by the United States military for pilot training during the 1950s and 1960s. The AT-6D Texan is a militarized version of the civilian North American T-6 Texan, which was based on the North American Harvard Mk.IV. The AT-6D was powered by two 1,425 horsepower Wright J65-W-20 turbojet engines, providing the aircraft with increased performance and capabilities compared to its piston-engine counterpart. In this photograph, N7448C is seen wearing the colors of an unidentified military unit. The aircraft's distinctive markings, including the red and white chevrons on the wings and the unit insignia on the fuselage, provide a glimpse into its history within the military aviation community. The North American AT-6D Texan continued to serve in various military roles until its retirement, with some examples being converted for use as target tugs or for other specialized missions. This photograph captures a moment in time when N7448C, a versatile and iconic trainer, was still in active service at San Fernando Airfield.
